The Journalism staff held a contest for students to send in their promposals via email for a chance to win 2 free prom tickets or a $25 gift card for any restaurant they wish.

On Thursday, May 25 2017, the staff took up the challenge of reading through all of the unique entries and reviewing the photos and videos. They had to engage in some difficult decision-making, and the votes were counted up. Darrien Newton took the win for first place.

The masterplan behind Darrien asking his girlfriend, Tayla, to prom was plotted throughout the day. He gave some of his friends balloons and cards that were handed to her in class throughout the day.

“In her 1st period class, she was given a “P” balloon,” Darrien said. “I also gave her a card that I wrote that had adjectives that started with the letter P.”

For the rest of her classes, he did the same with the rest of the letters: ‘R, O, and M.’ By the end of the day, she had all of the letters. At the end of the day, Darrien had Tayla escorted outside by the rock where the promposal was happening.

“I gave her roses. along with a sign that said ‘Roses are Red, Donuts are Bomb, Do Me a Favor, and Take me to Prom.’ I gave her box of donuts as well.”

This was enough to put the journalism staff at awe. On Friday, May 26 2017, Darrien Newton was announced to be the 2017 Prom contest winner. He was given the award of 2 free prom tickets. Congratulations Darrien Newton and Tayla Johnson!
