Counselors are a huge help throughout middle school and high school. They keep information of over a hundred students’ information and grades.

They are there for us whenever we ‘screw up’ and need some guidance. They deal with all types of students, ranging from kids who know what their path is, to kids who need to be guided toward the right path for them.

Mr. McNeal has been a counselor at Mount Vernon for two years. He is an amazing person, and he’s always there when his students need him.

Mr. McNeal won the August 2017 FCPS Cares Award. Students and parents at Mount Vernon High School really appreciate all the work he does for his students.

This is what Mr. McNeal had to say about how he felt after receiving the award:

“It was an honor. I felt that it was not just an individual award for me, but it was for all counselors that want to be there for their students.”

McNeal was nominated by a MVHS parent, who is proud of what Mr. McNeal has done for his son:

“He showed his passion in what he does and the care he has for his students. If I didn’t know any better I would think my son was the only student he worked with. I just wanted to truly thank him for caring enough to work beyond his hours and putting so much effort to ensure his students understand their options with classes and colleges. “

Mr. McNeal is helping out seniors in every way possible, which can be a difficult and stressful year for students

College applications, last minute SAT testing, and financial aid:Mcneal is making it easier for students by stepping in and helping them understand the importance of all these things and why they need to be well thought out.

Upon asking him why he thinks he received the award, McNeal said, “My main goal is to make sure students know that someone is there for them, to hear what they have to say and know that we counselors actually care about them and their future.”

Previous seniors would understand how stressful and overwhelming it is to apply to college. Not just that, but even after getting accepted, there are so many things to take into account, including classes, financial aid, and tuition.

Students are looking forward to attending college rather than being frightened by the responsibilities of being a college student.

“Thank you Mr. McNeal for your passion as a school counselor and getting my son excited again about school and the his future!” – A Mount Vernon High parent.
