MVHS theater arts presented The Secret Garden on January 19th and 20th. Based on a children’s novel of the same name written by Frances Hodgson Burnett in 1911, The Secret Garden was a perfect choice for the winter children’s theater play.

In the play, a young girl named Mary Lennox, played by Laura Schmechel, is a spoiled orphan who goes to live with her wealthy uncle in England after her parents pass away in India. Schmechel was amazing as the little girl; the spoiled nature of Mary apparent in her acting.

While exploring the manor, she discovers a desolate garden. With her care and attention, she is able to cultivate a stunning garden.

She also eventually finds an ill young boy who turns out to be her cousin,Collin, played by Kaylie Farfan. Farfan also gave a great performance, accurately portraying the hot-headed Collin.

Once the garden is complete, Mary’s uncle, Archibald, played by Max Fisher, arrives and is happy to see his son and the restored garden.

According to director, Jessica Shaw, auditions took place in November and rehearsals were everyday until January. The practice was evident in the cast and crew as everyone was very professional and passionate. The set was well-made and created an innocent atmosphere for the children’s play.

In the words of the director, “They [the cast and crew] really brought this classic tale to life on stage in such seamless, lovely performances.”

The Mount Vernon Theater department is improving every year. The department hopes to create a name for itself across the county says Shaw, who is also the theater teacher at the school.

Shaw is grateful for the administrative support the department has garnered and for the amazing and hardworking students that are involved in theater.

The next MVHS Theatre Arts next production is the musical Bye Bye Birdie which will be performed April 26th, 27th and 28th. Don’t miss out!
