The Mount Vernon Varsity Football team played three outstanding games last week and set their record at 3-0, beating Edison, Langley, and Falls Church.

Although the opponents played outstandingly well, the Mount Vernon Majors come out with the wins.

The Majors have had many upsets over the years, and were not always viewed as serious competition, but the mighty Monty Fritts changed it all.

The Majors have changed a lot over the years and have been slowly progressing forward in recent years.

The win against Edison shocked a tremendous number of people by the points on the board and their performances. MVHS managed to put up 70 points to Edison’s 13 points.

Jason Lewis, an outstanding linebacker, had an amazing game the first Friday of the season against Edison on August 25, demolishing their offense of players. Lewis impressed fans with 1 rushing TD, 1 forced fumble, 3 sacks, and a fumble recovery. He was making the Eagles offense look like fools. Jason Lewis gave the Majors their first win putting their record at 1-0.

Mr. Mount Vernon, Darrien Newton, shredded Langley on the second Friday game of September 1. Newton came out and showed what he was destined to do.

Newton’s two carries gave him 90 yards, and also gave him one touchdown. With 5 catches and 126 yards, Newton put another TD on board.

The Majors stayed amped up once sophomore running back, Jordan Reid, came out with 3 TDs, 15 carries, 64 yards, and 6 catches, giving him 148 yards.

Along with other outstanding plays and players, Lewis and Newton helped bring home the Majors with a 2-0 after this BIG win with the score of 38-17 Mount Vernon over Langley.

For Friday game #3, Falls Church decided to step up to the mighty Majors once again.

Last year, the Majors went up against Falls Church for a scrimmage. Falls Church crushed the Majors, but the Majors didn’t believe that would or could happen again.

The MV Majors big time quarterback, Timmy Heltzel, started to run all over the Falls Church defense like a car running over the road. Timmy managed to pick up 1 TD and rush for about 86 yards.

Darrien Newton, once again, showed people what he does on a regular basis. D Newt is what they call him, and he gave the Falls Church defense the business. He bought home to the Mount Vernon Majors a victory with 10 catches, 257 yards, and 3 TDs. Bringing home once again another win with the score 34-16. It’s just what D Newt does.

Coach Monty Fritts is feeling pretty happy about these 3 wins. He believes that there is and will be more wins coming to Mount Vernon.

Even he knows that the people outside of Mount Vernon don’t always believe in the team, but Fritts doesn’t let anything like that get to him. He WILL bring home more, and even better, successful wins.
